A toilet that hangs up or leaks looses about 200 gallons per day. Since the water flows down the septic tank, leaking toilets don't necessarily leave any signs of a leak, until you get the bill. The average leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water per day. That's over 6,000 gallons a month for just one leaking toilet!

A yard hydrant can leak underground. The bottom valve assembly on a yard hydrant cannot withstand freezing temperatures. It may crack or burst if frozen causing an underground water leak, which is a massive headache to fix. This valve piece is where the water shuts off. Below it, the pressurized waterline is ready to dispense water when opened. Leaks will vary from a small 1/2 gallons per minute to a totally busted 10 or 11 gpm. That is 72 to 14,400 gallons a day.

If you leave your yard hose on with a typical sprinkler using a standard 5/8" garden hose you use about 1,020 gallons of water an hour; if you water three times per week, that's about 12,240 gallons per month.

High water bills are usually caused by unnoticed customer usage.
